A rescue, some lovin', and adoptions...

I'll start with the adoption update! Sammie and Beethoven (the two fluffy puppies I had first) have been adopted by a loving family down the street. Alvin, the smallest one, has been adopted as well, but I still have him until just before Christmas because he is going to be a Christmas present! I think I scared the parents, their 14 year old girl has been asking for a dog, but they were thinking of a cat. I told them I had to wait 23 years for my first dog and now look at me! The two other girls are at the shelter and will hopefully be adopted soon. I stopped by Petsmart last Saturday and all 3 kitties were still there, but this time Kahlua and I got to go in the back and say "Hi!" I was kind of bummed that they were still there, but when I went back yesterday only Jack was there! 2 down, 1 more cat to go...

Okay, so now the rescue. I got a call this morning that there was an "aggressive" dog hanging out in a sink hole. When she had ran out of the hole to go after someone's dog, the dog owner heard puppies crying from the hole. He showed me where the dog was and you could see her and about 3 puppies, but she would not come out. The part where she was is circled in the picture. I tried luring her out with treats and even one of her own puppies, but she would not budge. I couldn't get a hold of her so unfortunately I had to sedate her to pull her out of the hole. I was able to get her out and then pulled out not 3, but 7 puppies! They didn't even have their eyes open yet. So cute!

And now the lovin'. Apparently dealing with the female dog this morning had me smelling pretty good. I went out for an "injured" dog that was running around just fine. He had no problems running away from me. I squatted down and threw him treats. Eventually I had him up next to me and sniffing me. He would even follow me around when I would walk, but if I tried to pet him or anything he would jump back and bark at me. I had almost given up and thought I was going to have to come back with a dog trap when he came up behind me and sniffed me some more. Next thing I know the dog jumped up and had his front paws on my back. I was able to maneuver enough to grab him and get a leash on him, but when I got him in the truck you could tell he was very excited. Then I was out at another house and this dog's nose was glued to my pants. He was so intrigued by the smells that he was drooling all over me. Then when I was trying to get some pictures he jumped up on me. I tried pushing him back with my leg and he wrapped his front paws around my leg. I couldn't shake him off and had to pry him off with my hands!

And last but not least, just an interesting website: http://www.americanhumane.org/protecting-animals/programs/no-animals-were-harmed/recently-released-movies.html
It explains how animals were treated on the big screen.

Only 9...

...animals in my house tonight. That’s one down from last week! I decided that 3 puppies are way better than only two since one of my neighbor’s has decided to adopt one and has been watching her quite a bit. That leaves a playmate for the remaining puppy. Then my 3 kitties got their surgeries on Monday, but stayed at my house until they were officially ready for adoption on Friday. They went straight to Petsmart into their adoption area. You can see them hanging out in the BIG kennel! They are the stars of the show there, as all the other cats get a little kennel. I’m surprised they were still there today, but hopefully they find great homes really soon! So after Friday I only had 7 animals in the house, but today I came home with not one, but 2 more puppies!! Another foster mommy was caring for them but it wasn’t working out with her animals so here I am, with 9. Some at work say that I am a glutton for punishment taking in all these animals, but I love it. It is surprisingly very quiet here despite all the animals running around. I’ve even opened my house up for adoptions. I think 3 of them may have homes. I’ll know more by the end of the week!

More Puppies!!!

I would say one of the best benefits of my job is that when you're having a "ruff" day you can go find a puppy somewhere and get a good puppy hug! Well that puppy hug got me into trouble on Friday as I ended up bringing two of them home! Pictured are Nala and Petunia (the darker one), who are 6 week old littermates. One of the other officers has been fostering their other sister as well. My kittens got big and are going in for their "surgery" tomorrow, but I am having a moral dilemma as far as the little orange one, Jake. I'm wishing I could keep him as he is a little snuggle bug with Zoey, but I know I can't have 3 cats and I feel weird re-homing Oscar.

Baby Got Adopted!!

...and hopefully they can come up with a better name for her! I guess it was the scrapbook I made for her that pushed the adopter over the edge. I can only hope that she will have an amazing home. Tonka got adopted as well last week, so I was very happy that those puppies all found loving homes too! I am hoping that my kitties can go back soon as I'm tired of cleaning up so much poop. It sounds like they will be lined up for their surgeries the week of Thanksgiving so hopefully they will get adopted quickly. Although I am sure they will, and don't worry, I have already spotted my next rescues! There are four chihuahua puppies that another officer and I picked up last Friday and I nicely let the adoption coordinator know that I would like them to go up front for adoption or go to my house until there is a spot up front. She said she should be able to get them up there on Monday :) I believe I have started a fostering trend at the shelter. I know of a few people that are now getting into fostering some of the animals now, which puts a big smile on my face. I look at Baby and all the kitties I have saved from euthanasia and it feels really good!
Here is a picture of me with my hands full! These are the little puppies I hope find great homes, they are definately mutts, but my favorite is the one standing on my arm. For some reason I have a thing for black dogs with white on their paws/chest. I have no idea why... Winky

One down…kinda…

Baby is currently up for adoption and is on display at the shelter! I brought her in on Wednesday and someone looked at her that day, but I guess they weren’t the kind of people I’d want her going home with. Then a great family came in on Thursday and they were trying to decide between her and another dog. They said they would be back Friday morning. I had been busy all week making a scrapbook for Baby and got it done in time to show the family on Friday, but they never showed up. Oh well, the book is at the shelter now and it shows off all of the good tricks she knows. I really hope she gets adopted soon because I can really tell she hates it in the kennel. It’s hard to explain, but she isn’t her normal playful self in the kennel. Also, after our little walk last night she didn’t want to go back in. During the week I still bring her home at night, but I didn’t want her to miss a good chance of adoption today (Saturday) so she had to stay over the weekend. Although, I am on call so if I have to go to the shelter I’ll take her home till Monday. She is scheduled to get spayed on Wednesday so that she can go to Petsmart next Saturday!!! And that is per the director so I am happy that everyone is trying to find her a good home. Jack, Jill, and Jake were scheduled to be altered this last Wednesday, but then…ACHOO! They started sneezing last week. So they are on medicine now and should be good to go soon. It’s amazing at how big they have gotten. Also, Tonka is still available too! He is staying small and is super cute! Hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween!

Trapping Adventures

So, I’ll start this blog with some animal control adventures. The Friday before last I was assigned to patrol the city of Coolidge. As I was driving along I saw a very thin pit bull walking along the road in a better area of the town (something I wouldn’t be as surprised to see on the other half of town). The poor thing was incredibly skittish, but fortunately for me very hungry and thirsty. Hoping I could gain his trust I set out some water and walked away. He slowly walked up and drank the water. I had to move my entire body very slowly, as even the slowest movements would make him jump. Well we played the game for a while of me giving water and then him jumping back as I approached. Finally I decided to set my dog trap, hoping that the dry food and water would lure him in. Usually I use wet food, but I forgot to put my can opener back in my truck and couldn’t open any of the cans! Well it worked and within minutes he was in the trap.
Later in the day I received a call for two dogs in a school playground. Well the field was quite large and all fenced in. I found the two dogs taking a nap and they woke up as I walked up to them. I had two leashes in my hand and my truck was probably about a football field away as they were on the far end of the playground. I kept saying “please be friendly…please be friendly” as it was late in the day and I was ready to head back to the shelter and take lunch. Unfortunately the dogs woke up and began barking at me. They were willing to eat the treats I had, but unwilling to get close enough and stay in one spot long enough to get the leash on them. Not to mention that even if I got them on the leash they would probably freak out and not be fun to walk back to the truck with. So then I had to go back to the office so someone could open the vehicle gate so I could bring the truck in closer. I attempted my trapping skills once again and placed some dry food along with pieces of my nectarine in the trap to help lure them in (as yet again I couldn’t open my can of wet food). Well the more timid one went in and was checking out the food and the more dominant one was standing in the opening of the trap. All I could see was the trap being set off by the first one and the trap door falling on and spooking the other one. If that happened I doubt I could get that dog to become interested in the trap again. Then my second fear, the first dog was in the trap, but it wasn’t closing. I guess in my rush to want to get back to the shelter I set the trap in a way that it didn’t get set off as easily. Well it actually worked to my advantage as the second dog moved in more and together their weight pressed down on the lever to set off the trap, catching both! By now I had one of the teachers as a spectator asking me the same question I was asking myself, “How do you get the dog out without the other escaping?” Well I somehow managed to get one out and close the door before the second could escape, impressing the teacher, as well as myself.
Also, I’m still looking for homes for Baby (accepting ideas for a better name), Jack, Jill, Jake, and Tonka! So please keep an eye out for possible homes, possibly even yours!!

New Arrivers!

Here is an updated picture of me in my uniform, along with my babies Zoey and Kahlua. Then you can see little Jack off to the right, but he’s not so little anymore. He’s becoming a cat. He is all done with his medication and I found him some friends. There were two kitties that were about the same size as him and it is really important for kittens to socialize with other kittens at an early age. Jack always had Oscar to play with, but Oscar has always been twice as big. Jack immediately loved playing with the little ones his size! Oscar enjoys having all the highly energetic playmates around too. I even think Ally is getting used to having other animals around as she seems to be more tolerable of the new arrivers. The two new kitties definitely have a spunky personality. The first day I had them they had figured out how to climb on the furniture and to the top of the cat crate. Jack will sometimes look up at them, but has yet to figure out how to join them. The two kitties can also climb to the top of the cat condo pictured. Jack has begun to try and climb. He makes it about halfway up the bottom post and then falls down and he has figured out how to get to the first shelf in the cat crate. So now I am trying to fatten up the new kitties as they are pretty thin, but they should be on their way to getting adopted very soon. The little gray one is Jill and I think she knows her name already. Every time I call it, she comes out of wherever she is hiding. Then there is my foster puppy! I picked her up a couple weeks ago when she had been dumped in someone else’s backyard. I let her ride in my truck until we got to the shelter where I cleaned her up (she had several ticks on her body and in her ears) and tried to figure out where her scars on the side of her body came from. Well the days counted down to her euthanasia date and finally on the last day I broke down and asked to foster her. I couldn’t say that final goodbye to her. I knew it was a risk bringing her home as Zoey can be very particular about dogs, but I knew I had to try. Last Friday I brought her home and introduced to Kahlua, who I wasn’t too worried about, but Kahlua explained very vocally that she wasn’t a big fan of the visitor. So I separated Kahlua and decided to let Zoey meet her. I put the baby girl into my outside kennel and brought out Zoey on a leash. Zoey ran up to the kennel and just started wagging her tail like crazy. I let them out together and they just played and ran and played… Kahlua continued to share her disgust with the visitor by yapping/barking, which I think was in part to jealousy that Zoey had someone new to play with. Well they played all night and then it was time for bed. I placed the baby girl’s crate in my bedroom so she didn’t have to be too far away. I placed her in there, talked on the phone for a bit and watched TV for a bit. Then when I turned the TV off she began to whine and whine. I squirted her with the squirt bottle a few times, but then…the the smell began to seep into my nose. She pooped in her crate. Yuk! I turned on the light and realized that she did not just go in her crate, but had diarrhea in and outside the crate, yes, on my carpet. I got her out cleaned her, the crate, and my floor. I then moved her out to the hallway where there was tile; put her back in the crate and settled back into bed. I turned the TV back on so I could settle down from the commotion. The baby girl was being quiet and I figured she had fallen asleep. I turned off the TV and she began whining immediately. I turned the TV back on and she stopped. Needless to say I fell asleep with the TV on that night, but by morning time she had more diarrhea. At least it was on the tile. That next day all my carpet got steam cleaned and the tile was mopped! Fortunately that was the last of those incidences. Unfortunately she did get sick on Sunday and had to spend most of the week back at the shelter to get treated for kennel cough. She is making a full recovery though and is back at home with me this weekend!! So far she is crate trained (even without the TV on), housebroken (no accidents in the last 3 days here) and while at the shelter she only peed in her kennel once (the first day when she was too sick to go on a walk), walks great on a leash, comes when called (most of the time) and knows “sit”. We are even working on lie “down” now. She is great with other dogs, cats, and kids. We have labeled her as a Labrador/Whippet Mix, and it is my prediction that she will only be about 30-40lb. She is 20lb now and about 4-5mo. She loves to cuddle and her favorite way to be held is upright just like a baby, she’ll even rest her head on your shoulder. Any takers???
Holly even came over for a brief visit last weekend!
