…and my groceries are still sitting on the counter! I’m exhausted!!! Being on call is more than I bargained for, of course working 25 more hours than your're used to in one week will do it to you. It truly started Friday morning with my first page at about 7:30am. Dog was loose, but wasn’t aggressive so I didn’t have to go out. Simple, easy, piece of cake! Then at 8:45am my pager goes off. It was the sheriff’s department. There was a bad accident on a hwy leading from Florence down toward Tucson and there were two dogs involved. My supervisor called me before I even had a chance to call him (I think he was scanning radio, which I have found useful as well). He ended up meeting me out there. When I arrived, one of the people in the car was being flown out by helicopter. The two dogs were ok. One had no apparent injuries and the other had a big gash on her back. It was approx. 6 inches long and a few inches deep. I transported both of them to an Emergency Vet Hospital. That was actually it for the holiday. Saturday I had a couple calls, but nothing too major, but Sunday… I was ready to throw the pager out the window on Sunday! I worked almost 10 hours on Sunday alone. Then I was excited for Monday! No pages from 8-5! Well I got a late bite call and got home late, and then I finally got brave enough to go grocery shopping. I was almost done and I get not one but two pages! I didn’t get home until about 12:30am. It was weird looking at the 24hr watch and seeing 00:24. Today the pager started at 5:05! I actually got 3 pages on the way home from work. Only had to respond to 2, and one the dog ended up being ok so I didn’t have to do anything. I relinquish the pager tomorrow!!!!!! At least I hope I do anyway. The girl I am supposed to give it to will be out sick. Poor thing, but we’ll see what happens tomorrow. Today, during my regular work hours, has been an interesting day in itself. A lady had her front door open so she could carry something in her house this morning and two pit bulls ran right in. Poor lady was scared, and I would be too. A sheriff got there long before I could get there so he got the dogs in his car and met me down the road. So that was a pretty easy call. Then I had my first court case today, but the defendant didn’t show up so I didn’t even have to say a word. After that I had go to pick up a live dog and then a dead one. Gross stuff to follow continue reading after next set of stars if you don't want to read it!!
***********the dog was on one of those metal plates they put on the road to cover holes in construction. Well in this heat it was more like a skillet. The dog was stuck to the plate like an egg on a non-oiled skillet. Ewww. The call came in yesterday so I was hoping that it would be safe to get today, but it was still bloated and the blood was still fresh. So other than a slight gooiness, the dog made it safely into the bag. ************
Okay, it’s safe to read again! So I make it back to the shelter to impound the one live dog. Well I had just prepared it to go into the kennels (we spray for ticks/fleas) and then somehow it got out of my truck and he bolted out the front gate. I ran to my truck and followed it across the street where a couple other officers had run to. We had 3 trucks go out to get the dog, but it jumped across the big canal
into some brush and we lost him. I was up on the actual dirt road that goes along the canal and then the two other trucks were down below in a dirt field. Well the other two trucks got stuck! One of the girls was able to rock her truck out of it and get back on the path she came out on, but not without a lot of flying dirt and a horrible ruckus coming from the suspension (first pic). The other truck was really stuck and my supervisor, who has a 4x4 truck, had to come out and pull her out (second pic). Fortunately we weren’t too far away. Anyway, I have a feeling I’ll be washing some dirty trucks tomorrow! We set up a trap just outside the shelter, so hopefully the dog will come back for some food. Oops!
On a good note, my foster kitties (all of them) are up for adoption! I am hoping they all find wonderful loving homes very, very soon! It’s also very nice having it just be the four of us at home (Me, Kahlua, Zoey, and Ally). Ally is stoked to have her room back, which was about the only thing I got accomplished yesterday!
